University of Alberta Formula Racing is a student-led project group where members design, manufacture, test, and eventually compete with an open wheel, Formula-style racecar. The international collegiate competition is hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The interdisciplinary competition brings together university teams to display their designs and share their passion for automotive engineering. The club is open to students from all disciplines as the project will force individuals to develop their budgeting, leadership, and collaborative skills. With the majority of the car fabrication done in-house, all members are encouraged to get involved with the manufacturing side of the project. Members who get involved can expect to develop their skills with power tools and machining equipment. The Elko Engineering Garage gives students training and access to equipment such as laser cutters, 3D printers, and even a CNC mill. Formula SAE is an amazing way to apply the skills you learn in university. The scope of the project will challenge you and ensure you are prepared for the real world, be it in the automotive industry or elsewhere. As of 2023, the team is primarily focused on developing a competitive electric racecar. UA-24 was the university’s first electric racecar and marked a major milestone as the team overhauled decades of combustion development to produce an EV capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in under 4 seconds.
