Ebrar Ejder
Vice President of Community Candidate
Hi y’all! I’m Ebrar, a second-year Mining Engineering co-op student with a passion for rocks, bugs, and crafts! This year, I’ve had the pleasure of serving as your Social Events and Art Show Coordinator, and your Health and Wellness Coordinator last year. I joined ESS during my first year to get involved on campus and meet awesome people! I really enjoyed my time in these roles because they allowed me to work with others to create a more welcoming, supportive, and collaborative environment for all students. My experience in these roles inspired me to get further involved with everything community! Running for VP Community, I’m excited to focus on improving how we welcome incoming students, fostering a tighter-knit and inclusive environment, and building on the amazing philanthropic work we do here.
Platform
Engineering Art Show
Adjust the timing and duration of the Art Show to better accommodate student and volunteer schedules, such as extending it over multiple days or hosting it during a high-traffic period to maximize participation and engagement
Collaborate more closely with engineering discipline clubs to highlight the unique creativity and innovation within each discipline
Continue to utilize Art Show workshops as a way to build community by creating a welcoming space where students can take a break from their studies, socialize, and bond over shared creativity
Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity, and Decolonization (EDID)
Work closely with other ESS portfolios to integrate EDID principles into event planning, ensuring accessibility, inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity in all aspects of event planning and advertisement
Conduct research and gather feedback to identify areas for improvement in ESS events and initiatives, using data to drive meaningful changes
Host workshops and events that educate students on the importance of equity, diversity, inclusivity, and decolonization in engineering
Collaborate with student groups to host events that raise awareness about EDID and accessibility, fostering a more inclusive and informed campus community
Orientation
Work with faculty and student leaders to revamp orientation activities, making them more engaging, inclusive, and reflective of the diverse backgrounds of incoming students
Collaborate with campus services (e.g., academic advising, and wellness centers) to ensure students are aware of the resources available to them
Organize interactive and engaging activities during Orientation to help students bond with peers, feel welcomed, and build a sense of community from day one
Philanthropy
Continue supporting and promoting major ESS philanthropy events like the Engineering Headshave and Pie Throw, which bring the community together for meaningful causes
Introduce new charity events, such as charity auctions, game nights, or talent shows, to diversify fundraising opportunities and engage more students
Promote volunteer opportunities for students to give back to the community, both on and off campus, through organized clean-ups, mentorship programs, or charity drives
Sustainability
Work with other ESS portfolios to integrate sustainable practices and thinking into event planning, such as reducing waste, using eco-friendly materials, and promoting recycling
Partner with student groups and campus sustainability organizations to host events like the clothing repair cafe
Health and Wellness
Work closely with the Academics and Services team to ensure a smooth transition of the Health and Wellness portfolio, preserving successful events while exploring new opportunities under community
Continue and expand popular events like Wellness Nights, Exam Snack Hangouts, and Pet Therapy Sessions to provide students with stress relief and relaxation during busy times
