Anim and Pahul

Co-VP Community Candidates

About Us

Anim, a second-year Mechanical Engineering Co-op student, currently holds the position of Co-Director of Sporting Events within ESS. Starting as a coordinator within ESS and subsequently being promoted to director, he is well-versed in the various responsibilities associated with the organization. Throughout his tenure as Sporting Director, he consistently sought to introduce new events and initiatives, providing fellow engineering students with opportunities to unwind from their studies and participate in their favourite sports. The e-sports division of Sporting experienced significant growth this year, establishing the base for future improvements. Apart from all these, you could catch him on campus screaming his lungs out watching Chelsea lose another game...

Pahul, a second-year Electrical Engineering student, currently holds the position of First Year Relations Coordinator within ESS. She has volunteered as the Competitions Coordinator and as a general volunteer for the Career Fair under the ESS. Throughout her roles she showcased her dedication to fostering a vibrant and inclusive environment for both eager first-year students within the engineering community as well as seasoned competitors in the UAEC competitions. She ensured that she completed all the responsibilities bestowed upon her to the best of her capabilities. Gaining all this valuable experience under the ESS as well as other student groups in organizing events, interacting with various groups of students and mentors she has gained better insights which will help her tackle the challenges in this role. Along with this you could catch her reading a novel around various spots on campus.

Platform

Going BIG in the Philanthropic Way

Each year, Community actively involves itself in orchestrating events aimed at providing crucial support to those in need. Through initiatives like the engineering headshave and car smash, Community endeavors to extend assistance to as many individuals as possible facing various challenges. Our aim will be to:

  • Introduce new events that will upscale the philanthropic contributions. We intend to organize a new philanthropic event, such as a charity ball, that will match the grand scale and high standard set by ESS. This event will be pivotal in furthering our philanthropic goals.

Anticipated highlights of the event include:

    • Performances from engineering students

    • Special invited guests

    • Exhibitions

    • Auctions

    • Dinner

  • Restructure existing events to appeal to a wider donor base, thereby expanding our outreach. We intend to accomplish this through the following ways:

    • Extend invitation to various schools to participate in the Annual Engineering Headshave through collaboration with the External Portfolio.

    • Collaborating with different student groups to increase participation and promote events across the campus.

  • Coordinate seminars to foster a deeper understanding of the importance of aiding others.

    • These will provide platforms for discussion, presentations, and interactive activities that delve into various aspects of philanthropic and community support.

    • We aim to highlight the significance of compassion, empathy, and collective action in addressing societal needs.

Expanding Sustainable Practices

Our goal within this department is to encourage greater participation in sustainable initiatives. We

are currently developing two new potential platforms aimed at aiding us in this endeavor.

  • Plant a tree initiative: To facilitate students in cultivating a profound relationship with the greenery in their immediate environment. Students will not only deepen their connection to plants but also play a pivotal role in enhancing the greenery across the campus. This, in turn, will contribute significantly to the improvement of our daily surroundings, fostering a more sustainable and vibrant campus environment for all.

  • Hosting a Repair Workshop: Where students will be taught how to fix everyday appliances and machines as well as having access to the necessary tools for repairs within the workshop. This initiative aims to promote the sustainable utilization of functional equipment while also enhancing the hands-on experience of engineering students.

Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity and Decolonization

This department may arguably be one of the most important within ESS, if not the most crucial. Therefore, our efforts to upholding its responsibilities will always fall short. Some initiatives we will try to accomplish include:

  • Hosting a cultural day to celebrate and share the diverse cultural backgrounds of all engineering students.

  • Creating an online platform aimed at facilitating the submission of anonymous reports, incidents, and suggestions to enhance campus safety and overall well-being.

  • Providing comprehensive structural training for all newly recruited and returning volunteers and executives within ESS before entrusting them with responsibilities.

  • Reviewing and updating event-specific documents within ESS to ensure that all engineering students at UofA have equal access to our events and resources.

  • Hosting seminars at the start of every semester to discuss the distinct roles and responsibilities of professors and teaching assistants (TAs) in relation to student interactions, with the objective of enhancing their conduct within the campus environment.

Creative Catalyst : The Engineering Art Show

Restructure and introduce new events to increase popularity and participation. Some new events you can expect from us are:

  • Collaborative Murals: To find common ground through shared artistic endevaors we plan to set up large canvases in various engineering building where engineering students can collaborate on creating murals that depict ideas, themes or abstract representations of shared human experiences.

  • Engg Got Talent: This certainly does not require a description, as it is what you think it is. So, channel your inner artist and showcase your talent on the big stage.

  • Pottery making workshop: a session where students will be taught to make potteries out of clay with the help of potter’s wheel.

  • Tattoo and Art Festival: Attendees will have the opportunity to utilize paints or henna for tattoo designs, with the chance to win exciting prizes. Additionally, this event may provide access to skilled professional artists.
